National Geographic Explorer at Large Shahidul Alam is a photographer, writer, curator and human rights activist who was named one of Time
magazine’s Persons of the Year in 2018 and CASE Humanitarian of the Year in 2021. After obtaining a Ph.D. in chemistry, Alam switched to photography
in 1983 and has been documenting the struggle for democracy in Bangladesh ever since. It is this work that brings him to Chautauqua to share how
photography can stir activism and positive change, and how stories help us understand each other and our world.
