Rebecca Nagle’s By the Fire We Carry braids American history and reportage to tell the story of Native removal, broken treaty promises and the generations-long fight for tribal land and sovereignty in eastern Oklahoma. Through a 1990s murder case that led to a 2020 Supreme Court ruling reaffirming Native rights, Nagle illuminates both the wrongs committed against Indigenous nations and the Native-led pursuit of justice.
